farewell, cars…

This past Monday, we sold our 7th car. It has served us well for 7.5 years but as the girls grow up, the need for a car is almost gone. The running costs and regular small repairs make sure it’s not prudent to keep the car. So yes, it’s gone and now we have cash for other meaningful purposes.

Let’s not forget, Singapore has the most expensive cars in the world. Just think with me, a brand new Honda Fit for S$180,000. Nuff said.

A colleague who’s also driving a used car felt the need to encourage me when I told him I’ve sold my car. However, I don’t feel lousy about selling the car. On the contrary, I feel liberated. I shared with him:

“But my family and I are at the stage where cars are not needed. Our girls are old enough to commute on public transport. We actually enjoy taking trains and buses. Releasing the car is a relief for me, the main driver. I got frustrated easily as a driver with antics and tons of road blocks on the roads. The car has served its time well for us. We had spent on major repairs without regrets. But the car is just a car. We have no emotional attachment to it. Now we have more cash for holidays, savings and medical protection. So it’s a blessing to be car free.”

Ironically, now that we have no car, we feel we can go anywhere we want to freely without the need to plan our routes and parking venues. Singapore public transportation is one of the best in the world and for good reasons. So yeah, we have moved on as a family.

So after 7 cars:

  1. Renault Express
  2. Ford Focus
  3. Chevrolet Aveo
  4. Subaru Impreza
  5. Volvo XC90
  6. BMW 523i
  7. Toyota Estima X

spanning 24 years, we go car-free. Family trips, trips to deliver babies, daily commute, fetching senior folks, trips to clinics and hospitals, trips to malaysia, church, makan trips, etc…it’s been fun and worthy with you all. Thank you, Cars, for all the conveniences! Farewell!
