I almost replaced the BOSS RC-10R with something simpler.
She is on the market because I like simplicity. I don’t use most of what she can do, and I don’t want to spend my playing time managing equipment. A S$25 Rowin looper suddenly looked tempting.
But this afternoon, I pulled the RC-10R back out.
Lady went into DORCAS, through the Dynatrem and into the Special 6 with the PPC108. I kept things basic: a few loops, some drums, then gradually longer loops.
It was fun.
The session eventually settled around my improvised version of the bassline from Garbage’s “Stupid Girl”. I added two more loop layers, Dynatrem slapback and Special Request cleans. Lady’s knobs were wide open. I played a clean solo over the loop for a while, then switched off the Special Request and brought in the DP-70.
The loop stayed.
The drums stayed.
I kept playing.
When I finally stopped, almost an hour had passed.
That told me something.
The RC-10R’s greatest value to me isn’t actually the looper. It’s the drum machine.
A simple looper can record me and let me play over myself. The RC-10R can do that too, but her drums give me something different: a pulse I have to respect.
I have to make the chords arrive on time. I have to make the loop land properly. I have to keep my phrases inside the beat. Longer loops expose my timing. Solos become exercises in phrasing rather than simply wandering around the fretboard.
She is, in that sense, a trainer.
I may be a home musician now. I play quietly, without much pressure, mostly because I enjoy making music at home. But that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t improve as a player.
I don’t need to become a virtuoso.
I just want to play better.
So the RC-10R remains on the market for now. I’m not taking her off yet. Perhaps someone else will eventually give her a better home.
But today reminded me that simplicity isn’t always about having fewer features.
Sometimes it’s about knowing which one feature actually matters.
For me, that might be the drum machine.
DORCAS helps me find my sound.
The RC-10R helps me find the beat.
And perhaps, over time, she can help me become a better guitarist too.
