tone on a budget: the pedals that taught me most

If you told me at the start of the year that two of my favourite pedals would be among the cheapest on my board, I’d have laughed. But here we are, and I’m smiling every time I plug in.

The Danelectro Cool Cat Tremolo and the H.B.E. Mimic Mock I delay aren’t just pedals—they’re feel machines. The Cool Cat wobbles with a warm pulse that brings life to every chord, while the Mimic serves up a slapback delay that lands me straight into the golden age of tone. And together, they form the heart of Darling Bliss, my dedicated signal chain for the Clapton Strat and the Fender Pro Junior IV.

These pedals don’t try to do everything. They just do one thing really, really well. No hidden menus. No “tap tempo” fuss. Just play, feel, respond. That’s everything to me.

Irony? Maybe. But I see it more as clarity. In chasing tone, I’ve learned this: price isn’t everything, connection is. And when something just clicks, that’s all that matters.

So yes, the Tonal Recall is stunning. The Orca is a dream. But these two—this $36 tremolo and $50 delay – they taught me the most important lesson: have faith in my ears, have faith in my hands, and above all, have faith in the joy.

Ps: the Donner Boost Killer that cost me $10 is part of the act here.
