I had a chat with a young player yesterday. He had interest in my 2008 Gibson Les Paul Standard with 50s neck but he didn’t like the feel. He had been trying different guitars over the years but he clearly is a modern guitar player, gearing towards Tom Anderson, PRS, Suhr, etc. His main axe now is a James Tyler strat.
The gentleman was surprised I’m interested in the Fender Deluxe Strat Plus with the roller nut. When I told him I just got a left-handed well used Gibson Les Paul Studio ’70s Tribute, he was equally shocked. Yet, it’s ironic that his James Tyler that’s been with him for 10 years is well worn with surface damages. He admitted he didn’t take great care of her. But she’s his no. 1.
So yeah I like old instruments or instruments that look old. Hence, I got excited when I see The Strat or 1979 fender anniversary strat or anything vintagy. So a flamed maple top or burl or any fancy finishing will not excite me. Maybe R9 doesn’t intrigue me cos of the flame. I just like simple single colour finishing. Again, it’s me. When I told the chap I’m lacking a tele, he recommended me the American Special with the Texas Special pickups.
Clearly, he and I are two different guitar players.
Ps: He didn’t buy the les paul.
