Sometimes, the best musical moments come when you least expect them. Today, I set out for a quick trial run with my Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe — a pedal I’ve had listed for sale, waiting for the right buyer. What unfolded in that brief session surprised me and reminded me why this pedal deserves a second look.
I started by plugging my 2022 Player Precision Bass straight into the Plexi-Drive’s growl channel, keeping the gain dialed moderate to preserve clarity while engaging the active 3-band EQ and bass boost. Running the bass through the pedal and looping a couple of layers on my BOSS RC-10R, I was struck by the pedal’s unexpected depth and warmth. The Plexi-Drive wasn’t just adding distortion— she was sculpting tone with amp-like dynamics and a harmonically rich growl that breathed life into the bass.
The ease of dialing in the tone stood out. Unlike my BOSS GE-7 graphic EQ, which offers flexibility but demands fiddly adjustments, the Plexi-Drive gave me immediate musicality. Her touch sensitivity and natural response made her feel like a true preamp, not just an overdrive pedal repurposed for bass.
Switching over to my Fender Japan Junior Collection Stratocaster “Joy,” I initially engaged the Plexi-Drive’s boost channel for a few minutes, adding subtle warmth and grit. Then, I bypassed her completely to let Joy’s clean voice shine. Layered over the bass loops, Joy’s clear and expressive lead lines created a beautiful call-and-response, all held together by a crisp 4/4 funk drum loop.
Throughout, the music centered around the D minor scale, with bass notes weaving from D to C, then dipping chromatically through B major to B flat, creating a moody yet engaging harmonic backdrop. The groove felt tight and alive, thanks in part to the funk mode on the drum loop.
What made this session truly special was the tonal balance and vibe. The Plexi-Drive Deluxe proved herself as more than just a distortion pedal; she’s a versatile, musical preamp that comfortably anchors both bass and guitar in a live looping context. It’s rare to find a pedal that sounds great, plays well across instruments, and requires minimal tweaking.
For now, despite my intention to sell, the Plexi-Drive Deluxe has earned her place as the base preamp in my Bass Chops signal chain—a reminder that sometimes, gear you’re ready to part with can surprise you with staying power.
