I found her in July, used, for just S$80—and she’s quickly become my underdog pedal. I’ve always had a soft spot for underdogs, the ones overlooked until they bare their teeth. The Bulldog fits that role perfectly.
She isn’t your typical stompbox. This one carries two 12AX7 tubes under the hood, part of Vox’s Cooltron series. That’s why she doesn’t sound like the usual silicon crunch machines. These tubes bring a living, breathing element to her voice. When I dig in with my fingers, she growls; when I ease up, she softens into a warm purr. That organic compression and harmonic bloom—that’s the reason I got her.
Vox designed her to bottle up some of that classic Vox tone, and it shows. There’s a chime hidden inside her roar, a little bit of that glassy top-end sparkle that balances her grit. She’s got two gain stages too, so I can flip from classic crunch to full saturation with just a stomp. Both voices carry the unmistakable touch of glowing glass.
Most players chase after the obvious pedals; I stumbled on this Bulldog and couldn’t be happier. For the price of a dinner out, I’ve got a tube-powered beast at my feet. She may not have the fame of the Rats or the Muffs, but in my chain, she’s earned her keep.
An underdog? Yes. But also a fighter with tubes for fangs.
