Every once in a while, the universe tosses a guitarist a deal so good, you almost feel guilty taking it. Almost.
My recent find yesterday while I was surfing the market in JB? A 2012 Fender American Vintage Reissue ’56 Stratocaster in black, picked up for a jaw-dropping S$700.
Yes, seven hundred dollars. For an AVRI. Let that sink in.
A Cruise-Liner Veteran With Stories in Every Ding
This Strat wasn’t some pampered case queen. She spent years as the workhorse of a musician on a Norwegian cruise liner — a proper “played, not displayed” guitar. And it shows:
- Honest nicks, dings, and play wear everywhere
- Maple fretboard with dark patches from sweat and years of gigs
- Copper foil shielding the entire pickup cavity
- Non-original 11-hole pickguard (body drilled to match)
- Missing backplate
- Non-original trem bar
- No tweed case, no candies — just a full-sized acoustic foam case
In other words: pure, unapologetic player-grade mojo.
Some people say “issues.” I say “character.”
And for S$700? I say “THANK YOU VERY MUCH.”
The Great 2012 Connection
Funny thing — this isn’t my first 2012 deal.
I once owned a 2012 AVRI ’56 Strat in aged blonde, in good condition. That one sold for S$1,800, giving me a neat little profit of S$242.50.
And then there’s my 2012 Gibson Les Paul Studio ’70s Tribute “Free”, which cost only S$400.
What’s with 2012 guitars falling into my lap at ridiculous prices?
Who knows — but I’m not arguing. If 2012 wants to keep giving, I’m here waiting with open arms.
Is the Black Strat Worth It? Absolutely. Painfully. Comically Yes.
Even factoring in every flaw, missing part, and mod, a 2012 AVRI ’56 Strat for S$700 is absurdly underpriced. Player-grade AVRIs in Singapore realistically fetch:
- S$1,400–S$1,900 for worn or modified ones
- S$2,200–S$3,000+ for clean examples with case and candies
So this black warrior?
She’s worth double to nearly triple what I paid — without doing anything to her.
More Than a Guitar — A Story
What I’ve ended up with isn’t just a Strat.
It’s a guitar that’s lived, travelled, gigged, and seen more sunsets on the open sea than I probably have. A guitar with stories in every scratch and personality in every worn patch of maple.
She might not be original. She might not be clean.
But she’s mine — and she’s got the kind of mojo you can’t relic with any tool.
And at S$700, she’s officially one of the best steals I’ve ever pulled off.
Ps: She’s either my workhorse or my business. Time will tell.
